On Wednesday, February 17th, 2016, AmCham Macedonia held a round-table discussion on “Consumer Protection and Competition” with representatives from member and non-member companies, the State Market Inspectorate and the Consumer Protection Organization.
During the discussion we included presentations from the following speakers:
- Sonja Solevska,Head of Unit, State Market Inspectorate (presentation);
- Vesna Gavrilovska, Attorney at Law, Cakmakova Lawyers (presentation);
- Marijana Loncar Velkova, President, Consumers Protection Organization (presentation); and
- Ljupka Noveska, Attorney at Law, Karanovic & Nikolic.
All speakers referred to companies’ legal obligations in relation to consumers, but also in relation to other companies, the challenges they face in dealing with complaints of consumers depending on the services or products they offer, and the EU trends in protection of consumers and competition.
“There is a large gap between the practices of the international competitive companies and the local legal framework. That’s why is crucial these companies to be involved in raising standards and defining the legal obligations under consumer protection and competition.” said Michelle Osmanli, AmCham Macedonia’s Executive Director.
As a general conclusion, all participants agreed that a modern and efficient legal framework is a necessity for improvements in these areas. However, the business community must be directly involved in the legislation process in order to develop upgraded solutions that realistically respond to the challenges that consumers and businesses face.
