On Thursday, September 22nd , 2016, AmCham Macedonia organized a round-table discussion on “The Real Market Value of Copyrights” in cooperation with the Hospitality and Tourism Association (HTA) within the Economic Chamber of Macedonia (ECM) and the EU Twinning project “Strengthening the protection of copyrights”.
This lively discussion included roughly 40 key stakeholders, including Ministry of Culture representatives, companies from sectors that generally pay the highest tariffs for use of copyrighted material, prominent law firms working in the IP field, international experts and members of the diplomatic corps.
In the opening, Michelle Osmanli, AmCham Macedonia’s Executive Director, emphasized the importance of a tariff setting process that ensures adequate compensation for authors as well as rational and sustainable costs for local users. She also noted that a functional and sustainable copyright protection framework in Macedonia is of equal importance to the country’s development as trademark protection.
The discussion was enriched by contributions from a number of notable international experts, including:
- Susanna Narsisyan, Director of ArmAuthor
- Slobodan Nešović, Managing Director, Mascom EC Beograd
- Dariusz Urbanski, Ministry of Culture, Poland
- Janne Hedegaard, Danish Patent and Trademark Office
Business representatives reiterated their willingness to continue supporting authors by paying tariffs set by an inclusive, transparent and rational process centered on true dialogue. International experts confirmed that the tariff setting process suffers from similar challenges in many countries, which is why EU countries began transposing an EU Directive on Collective Management of Copyright in April this year.
This event was part of our continuing efforts to help advance the protection of Intellectual property in Macedonia and was a unique opportunity for stakeholders to gain perspectives on current local, regional and global trends and challenges in this field.
AmCham and ECM conclusions and recommendations will be released at an ECM-hosted press conference on Monday, September 26th at 11:00 am.
