Makedonski Telekom won the prestigious award for the “Smart City” project from the World Information Technology and Services Alliance – WITSA. The high worldwide recognition was presented at the ceremony during the World Congress on Information Technology which was held in the City of Brasilia (Brazil) from 3rd to 5th of October.
Makedonski Telekom received the award for the “Smart City” project in the category of Sustainable Growth Solution. This category included nominated solutions that promote sustainable economic growth, which is defined as the ability to improve the financial and social situation in the country. The “Smart City” project was nominated for this year’s WITSA awards as one of the five wining solutions at the local competition which was organised by the Macedonian ICT Chamber of Commerce – MASIT.
With the innovative approach of Makedonski Telekom, the “Smart City” project implemented modern integrated automatic vehicle location system and electronic ticketing system in the public city transport, with unique central database which enables real time monitoring of the traffic network and the passengers’ movement, as well as control and regulation of the transport service. It is the first project whereby Makedonski Telekom started the transformation of Skopje into modern and smart city following the example of the world metropolitan cities. In this manner, the quality of the public transport was advanced, providing faster and more efficient transport for the citizens and the tourists in the capital, thus increasing the attractiveness of the public transport on the long run. “Smart City” is not only a project for improvement of the quality of the bus transport, but it is also a beginning of an era of Internet of Things in Macedonia.
